Text Box: In the January 2006 issue of SWAP, the second quarterly edition, I had the audacity to suppose a swimmer from New Jersey could represent the U.S. at the 2008 Olympics. I asserted that Rebecca Soni was a potential candidate. Well, New Jersey Swimming is brimming with pride as Soni, a protégé of Tom Speedling of the Scarlet Aquatic Club, earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in the 200 breaststroke.
Even better, there is a second swimmer that will represent the U.S. at the Olympics who hails from New Jersey. Cullen Jones placed third in the 100 free and will attend the Olympics to swim the 4X100 free relay.
It was a treat to watch Trials. I was particularly struck by the sportsmanship I observed. There is an article on sportsmanship in this issue of SWAP that cites the sportsmanlike behavior of such athletes as Brendan Hansen, Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin.
My teammate, Jillian Altenburger of the Berkeley Aquatic Club, competed in Olympic Trials in which she swam a life time best in the 200 I.M. For this issue of SWAP, Jillian shares her experience of training for Trials.
Danielle Romain, a multiple New Jersey Junior Olympics high point winner, has national aspirations. This issue includes a profile of this versatile high point winner. In yet another article, Chris DeLaFuente recounts his record-
breaking swim at the Union County, New Jersey High School Championships for which he was named Union County Male Athlete of the Year.
Meanwhile, Teresa Soley shares her experience as a homeschooled athlete. She tells about the flexibility homeschooling allows academically as well as athletically, and points to the fact that Katie Hoff, the five-event winner at Trials, is also homeschooled. For me, a public school student, there was no flexibility in my junior-year experience. It was tough but I survived to write about it. In this issue I outline the major highlights of junior year: academic challenges, college tours, swimming expectations and the recruiting process.
I look forward to my senior year of high school, where I will move on to create an all-sports magazine for my high school.
